If people say Car GPS, it’s mean a GPS receiver. GPS is a receiver of GPS satellite signals. There are 24 units of GPS satellites (and several backup satellites) are placed outside the space and around the earth two times a day. GPS satellites are sending the signal to worldwide that had been received by the GPS receiver unit.

How GPS works? GPS Satellite
GPS receiver unit will be determine its position, where is the location in the earth, by receive the GPS signal. Minimum required 3 satellite signals to be able to translate the GPS units and counting, the Longitude and Latitude data. The GPS units can generate information altitude (height above sea level) if there are four satellite signals.
Let’s say we already install GPS into our car. When we are driving the car and move from one place to another, GPS units also count our position and will display information of longitude, latitude, also vehicle speed. In addition, GPS car also have the function of direction determinant as well as compass.
Previously, GPS signal only using by US military but public also can utilize this GPS signal currently. If we buying a GPS so it does not require registration or other license and free service for using GPS signal. So by buying GPS units, we can directly utilize GPS signal for any kind purpose and get our location information.
When we buying car navigation such as Garmin GPS, Magellan, Mio GPS, and etc, these GPS units usually have been installed the map. Currently, there is only a part of Indonesian area has been GPS map that Java island, Bali island and Sumatera island. The Map should be displays the name of road, the name of area, and others.
And if the map already installed in the GPS memory, we can ask the GPS to show the location of a place is called as Point of Interest (POI) that office building, gas station, bus terminal, plaza/mall, shopping center, and others public place. The best GPS is should be allow us to adding or update Point of Interest.
And even we can ask the GPS to guide and lead us toward the POI as our destination. This GPS feature’s is called as “routing feature”. Besides routing feature, car GPS usually has “track log feature” to recoding our trip/journey. Track Log feature is very useful when we go to “blind spot area” or offroad purpose since we can go back through the same point earlier by using reverse track log.
