Other models, in the meantime; Sedan enjoyed a market share of 5.6% or 34,300 units.  City car models such as the Honda Jazz, Kia Picanto, sold in a total amount of 65,000 units or 10.7%.  The SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) models with an amount of 95,970 units (15.8%).  Double cabin vehicles such as Ford Ranger, and Mitsubishi L200 were sold in amount of 13,900 units (2.3%).  In addition of the passenger car segments mentioned above, pick-up cars, trucks and buses (commercial car) were sold in an amount of 168,800 units (27.7%).

The MPV model is definitely the first choice model for those who have a family.  It is able to accommodate 7 or 8 passengers’ altogether.  This capability is suited to the Indonesian culture who likes to travel in a big group.  Furthermore, MPV models are subjected to a lower amount of tax compared to other models e.g. sedan.  As a result the MPV model has a cheaper and affordable price for the Indonesian public.

The top selling MPV in Indonesian until now is the Toyota Avanza.  The sales of the Toyota Avanza, both the 1.300 cc and the 1.500 cc reached 85,535 units or 37% of the total sales of MPVs in Indonesia.  The second top selling MPV is the Toyota Kijang Innova, both the diesel and petrol-powered engine, sold in an amount of 51,189 units, or 22.3% from the total MPV sold.

Daihatsu Xenia, in the meantime, who has similar models and specifications with the Toyota Avanza, were sold in a total of 34,065 units (14.8% market share).  Suzuki APV sold 19.695 units (8.6% market share).

Nissan Grand Livina, who was once described as the ‘Kijang Killer’, holds a market share of 7.3% with total sales of 16,704 units.

It is estimated that the growth of sales of MPVs in 2009 will be sustained.  This is further supported by the fact that numerous manufacturers are planning to launch new models to further stimulate the market.  In 2009, Daihatsu is planning to introduce the Daihatsu Luxio, while Suzuki will sell the APV Luxury, a new variant of the Suzuki APV.  Furthermore, there was news that Daihatsu will introduce the Daihatsu Sirion MPV who will be brought by Malaysia’s manufacturer, Perodua.  Other Malaysian manufacturer, Proton is also planning to introduce the Proton Exora.

In addition and hyped by the media is the introduction of the Honda Freed, this 7-seater MPV will compete in the same market segment as Toyota Kijang Innova and Nissan Grand Livina.

Surely the most beneficial party in these launching plans is the Indonesian public.  As there are more options thus able to compare the most specifications, features and the most suitable price.
