Used Cars Sales is increase

By Ali Budiman

Indonesia Cars Sales in 2008 reached 607,770 units, based on wholesalesdata or vehicles deliver to deliver/showroom. But what about the sales of used cars?  For such number it is more difficult to collect.

But if one notices the booming of used cars outlets/showrooms in Indonesia, then it is an assurance for the fact that the used cars market is an attractive market.

For instance; within the Depok area, South Jakarta; there are more than 50 used cars outlets.  If one outlet, in average, is able to sell 5 units/month, then a total of 250 units of used cars are sold in Depok alone.  In a year’s time, then almost 3000 units of used cars is sold.  Even though according to SAMSAT/Police Registration, the registrations of new cars within Depok in 2008 are only 10.000 units.

There are several factors that further increase the sales of used cars in Indonesia:

1. The price of new cars is increasing.

One of the factors that determine the selling price of cars is the exchange rate of US dollars and Japanese Yen.  If the rate of the Indonesian Rupiah weakens, then car manufacturers in Indonesia are forced to increase their price.  This resulted in the increase of selling price for new cars.  As a potential buyer who has a low buying power, then one is forced to buy a used car to fulfill one’s needs.

2. Avoiding Depreciation

One of the unique characteristics of Indonesians in fulfilling our needs in buying a car is “What is the resale value of my car if I decided to resell it?”  As a result there are a lot of Indonesians who bought used cars to avoid depreciation.  Once one’s car is out of the showroom, its value will be affected by depreciation.  In average, a vehicle will lose a maximum of 30% of its total value within the first 2 years due to depreciation.  There are, however, other factors that determine the resell value of used cars.  Such as; the brand, conditions of the car, usage and maintenance and the condition of the market further determine the depreciation value of your new car.

3. Not wanting to wait for the delivery time of the new car (indent)

Some models of cars that are popular in the market, has a relatively longer delivery date compared to the less popular models.   As a result, there are a notable amount of buyers who are unwilling to wait during that period of waiting time and decided to look for other alternatives in used cars who are ready in stock.  This is due as the demand of the market is bigger than the total production capacity or import quota.  Toyota Avanza, Daihatsu Xenia, Nissan Grand Livina, Honda Jazz, are some of the models who have experienced this particular phenomenon.

MPV models makes up 38% of Indonesia Car Sales in 2008

By Ali Budiman

Indonesia Cars Sales in 2008 reached 607,770 units, and 38% of it are MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) based models. The vehicle that able to accommodate 7 to 8 passenger reached a total sales amount of 230,000 units.  This amount increased by 35% from previous year’s sales that reached 170,000 units.

Indonesia Cars Sales 2008

Indonesia Cars Sales 2008

Other models, in the meantime; Sedan enjoyed a market share of 5.6% or 34,300 units.  City car models such as the Honda Jazz, Kia Picanto, sold in a total amount of 65,000 units or 10.7%.  The SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) models with an amount of 95,970 units (15.8%).  Double cabin vehicles such as Ford Ranger, and Mitsubishi L200 were sold in amount of 13,900 units (2.3%).  In addition of the passenger car segments mentioned above, pick-up cars, trucks and buses (commercial car) were sold in an amount of 168,800 units (27.7%).

The MPV model is definitely the first choice model for those who have a family.  It is able to accommodate 7 or 8 passengers’ altogether.  This capability is suited to the Indonesian culture who likes to travel in a big group.  Furthermore, MPV models are subjected to a lower amount of tax compared to other models e.g. sedan.  As a result the MPV model has a cheaper and affordable price for the Indonesian public.

The top selling MPV in Indonesian until now is the Toyota Avanza.  The sales of the Toyota Avanza, both the 1.300 cc and the 1.500 cc reached 85,535 units or 37% of the total sales of MPVs in Indonesia.  The second top selling MPV is the Toyota Kijang Innova, both the diesel and petrol-powered engine, sold in an amount of 51,189 units, or 22.3% from the total MPV sold.

Daihatsu Xenia, in the meantime, who has similar models and specifications with the Toyota Avanza, were sold in a total of 34,065 units (14.8% market share).  Suzuki APV sold 19.695 units (8.6% market share).

Nissan Grand Livina, who was once described as the ‘Kijang Killer’, holds a market share of 7.3% with total sales of 16,704 units.

It is estimated that the growth of sales of MPVs in 2009 will be sustained.  This is further supported by the fact that numerous manufacturers are planning to launch new models to further stimulate the market.  In 2009, Daihatsu is planning to introduce the Daihatsu Luxio, while Suzuki will sell the APV Luxury, a new variant of the Suzuki APV.  Furthermore, there was news that Daihatsu will introduce the Daihatsu Sirion MPV who will be brought by Malaysia’s manufacturer, Perodua.  Other Malaysian manufacturer, Proton is also planning to introduce the Proton Exora.

In addition and hyped by the media is the introduction of the Honda Freed, this 7-seater MPV will compete in the same market segment as Toyota Kijang Innova and Nissan Grand Livina.

Surely the most beneficial party in these launching plans is the Indonesian public.  As there are more options thus able to compare the most specifications, features and the most suitable price.

Retail Price of New Cars

March 24th, 2009

In 2009, the price of cars will sky rocketed

By Ali Budiman

The economical crisis that hits the United States, then Europe, has impacted on the Indonesia Cars Sales.  The buying power of the public is decreasing.  Numerous of sectors and industries are forced to shut down.  As a result, car manufactures has to adapt and look for new strategies to be able to stay in business during this crisis period.

The declining value the Indonesian Rupiah against the US Dollars and Japanese Yen, has forced car manufacturers to increase their prices.  In September 2008, the Indonesian Rupiah is at a value of Rp. 9,500 per US 1 Dollar.  Whilst in October 2008 the value is at Rp 12,000 per US 1 Dollar.

Consequently, the price of new cars is increasing almost every month.  If one looks at the price in March 2009 compared to October 2008, then almost every brand has increased their price by 10 to 15 %.  There are even a few models whose prices are increased by 18%.

The most economical variant from Toyota Avanza for instance, the E-1.3L- Manual Transmission, price per October 2008 is Rp 116,800,000.  While its price in March 2009?  Rp 129,600,000.  An Increase by Rp 13,000,000 or 11%.

From October until March 2009 for all Toyota Kijang Innova variants, there has been an increase of Rp 27,000,000 or around 13% in price.

Nissan Grand Livina variant XV-1.5L-MT increased by Rp 21,000,000 from Rp 158,000,000 per October 2008 to Rp 179,000,000 per March 2009.

Even All New City, the small sedan by Honda that was launched at 28 November 2008, is forced to increase its price by Rp. 10,000,000 for its Manual variant and Rp 12,000,000 of its Automatic transmission, consequently its retail prices are between Rp. 249,000,000 to Rp 272,000,000.

Suzuki, meanwhile, was unable to withstand the impact of the declining value of the Indonesian Rupiah against the Japanese Yen.  As a result, the Suzuki Neo Baleno had to increase by Rp 30,000,000 to Rp 206,000,000 million (MT) and Rp 217,000,000 (AT).  The Suzuki Swift’s retail price of Rp. 137,000,000 ~ Rp. 160,000,000 changed to Rp 163,000,000 ~ Rp 186,500,000.

The same goes for Hyundai, the car manufacturer from South Korea, had to increase the price of its Hyundai Avega, the 1.500 cc sedan.  This lift back sedan whose price, in October 2008, is Rp. 102,750,000 ~ Rp. 132,000,000 have increased to Rp. 118,000,000 ~ Rp. 147,850,000.

In the first 3 months of 2009, the rate of the Indonesian Rupiah is still considered to be unstable.  When this article is written, the Indonesian Rupiah is still sold at Rp 11,500/ 1 USD.  Thus the further increase of retails prices of cars in 2009 is quite likely.

Indonesia Cars Sales 2008 grow 40% from 2007

By Ali Budiman

Indonesia Cars Sales Volume 2008 vs 2007

Indonesia Cars Sales Volume 2008 vs 2007

Indonesia Cars Sales in 2008 reaches 607,770 units, an increase by 40% from the sales in 2007 at 434,313 units.

The sales of cars in 2008 have exceeded the target estimated by GAIKINDO, Gabungan Industri Kendaraan Bermotor Indonesia (Indonesia Automotive Association) of 520.000 units.

Based on the data from GAIKINDO it is revealed that the sales of cars in 2008 was increasing every month.

The number of sales in January was 41,375 units, February was 47,466 units, March 46,714 units, April 51,655 units, May 50,718 units, June 54,707 units, July 60,830 units, August 58,491 units, September 55,231 units and October 54,813 units.

In the last two months the sales of cars in Indonesia was declining, November 46,119 units and December 39,651 units.  The economical crisis that hit both the USA and Europe, have impacted on the automotive industry in Indonesia.

Since November 2008, the interest rate from Bank Indonesia increase from 8.75% to 9.5%.  This resulted in the decline of car sales, due to the financial/leasing companies have raised their credit interest rate and tighter credit control towards consumers, while 80% of car sales in Indonesia is paid by credit using leasing companies.

Further more, the exchange rate of the Indonesian Rupiah against the US Dollars weakens from Rp 9,500 to Rp 12,000 per 1 USD.  Consequently, car manufacturers are forced to raise their retail prices by 20%.

Indonesia Cars Sales Volume 2008 By Brand

Indonesia Cars Sales Volume 2008 By Brand

Car sales in Indonesia are still dominated by Japanese brands.  Toyota is still leading the automotive industry in Indonesia with total sales of 211,909 units or 35% market share.  Mitsubishi is second with total sales of 87,524 units or 14.4% market share.  Followed by Daihatsu 78,041 units (13%), Suzuki 73,066 units (12%), Honda 52,500 units (8.6%), Nissan 31,881 units (5.2%), Isuzu 25,325 units (4.2%), Hino 14,227 units (2.3%).  Lastly, other 20 brands sharing total sales of 33,297 units (5.5%).

Almost every brand experienced a significant increase of sales in 2007.  Like Toyota who enjoyed an increase up to 41% from the sales in 2007 of 150,631 units.  Even Daihatsu’s sales increased up to 50% from its 51,597 unit sales in 2007, dethroning Suzuki from the top 3 position in the Indonesian automotive industry.

But what about the sales in 2009?

The sales of cars in 2009 are expected to decline up to 30%.  GAIKINDO predicted total car sales of 430,000 units in 2009.  This is due to the global economical crisis that has yet to recover from, interest rate that has yet to decrease in a significant amount and the Indonesian currency that is still fluctuating.

Especially in 2009, where Indonesia will be helding it’s once every 5 years presidential election and legislatives.

We shall see whether the car sales in 2009 will be able to withstand the political and economical conditions.  Hopefully it will.
