Retail Price of New Cars

March 24th, 2009

In 2009, the price of cars will sky rocketed

By Ali Budiman

The economical crisis that hits the United States, then Europe, has impacted on the Indonesia Cars Sales.  The buying power of the public is decreasing.  Numerous of sectors and industries are forced to shut down.  As a result, car manufactures has to adapt and look for new strategies to be able to stay in business during this crisis period.

The declining value the Indonesian Rupiah against the US Dollars and Japanese Yen, has forced car manufacturers to increase their prices.  In September 2008, the Indonesian Rupiah is at a value of Rp. 9,500 per US 1 Dollar.  Whilst in October 2008 the value is at Rp 12,000 per US 1 Dollar.

Consequently, the price of new cars is increasing almost every month.  If one looks at the price in March 2009 compared to October 2008, then almost every brand has increased their price by 10 to 15 %.  There are even a few models whose prices are increased by 18%.

The most economical variant from Toyota Avanza for instance, the E-1.3L- Manual Transmission, price per October 2008 is Rp 116,800,000.  While its price in March 2009?  Rp 129,600,000.  An Increase by Rp 13,000,000 or 11%.

From October until March 2009 for all Toyota Kijang Innova variants, there has been an increase of Rp 27,000,000 or around 13% in price.

Nissan Grand Livina variant XV-1.5L-MT increased by Rp 21,000,000 from Rp 158,000,000 per October 2008 to Rp 179,000,000 per March 2009.

Even All New City, the small sedan by Honda that was launched at 28 November 2008, is forced to increase its price by Rp. 10,000,000 for its Manual variant and Rp 12,000,000 of its Automatic transmission, consequently its retail prices are between Rp. 249,000,000 to Rp 272,000,000.

Suzuki, meanwhile, was unable to withstand the impact of the declining value of the Indonesian Rupiah against the Japanese Yen.  As a result, the Suzuki Neo Baleno had to increase by Rp 30,000,000 to Rp 206,000,000 million (MT) and Rp 217,000,000 (AT).  The Suzuki Swift’s retail price of Rp. 137,000,000 ~ Rp. 160,000,000 changed to Rp 163,000,000 ~ Rp 186,500,000.

The same goes for Hyundai, the car manufacturer from South Korea, had to increase the price of its Hyundai Avega, the 1.500 cc sedan.  This lift back sedan whose price, in October 2008, is Rp. 102,750,000 ~ Rp. 132,000,000 have increased to Rp. 118,000,000 ~ Rp. 147,850,000.

In the first 3 months of 2009, the rate of the Indonesian Rupiah is still considered to be unstable.  When this article is written, the Indonesian Rupiah is still sold at Rp 11,500/ 1 USD.  Thus the further increase of retails prices of cars in 2009 is quite likely.
